New Permanent Representative of Romania presents credentials

VIENNA, 22 February (UN Information Service) – The Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations (Vienna), Stelian Stoian, presented his credential today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Ghada Waly.

During his career, Mr. Stoian has served in various capacities, among them:

Dean of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Permanent Representatives (2019 – present); Permanent Representative of Romania to NATO (2013 – present); Permanent Representative of Romania to the Council of Europe (2006-2013); Director General,  Directorate General for the UN and Global Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2004-2006); Director of the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2004); Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy to the United States(2001-2004); Director, Division for Nonproliferation and Arms Control, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2001); Second Secretary, Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations, New York (1996-2000); Third Secretary, Counselor with the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995-1996); and Assistant Attaché, Attaché and Third Secretary, UN Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991-1994).

Additionally, he was a member of the team coordinating Romania’s membership in the UN Security Council (2004-2005), the team promoting Romania’s candidature for joining NATO (2001-2004) and the coordinating team for the OSCE Chairmanship in Office (2001).

Mr. Stoian studied at the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest.

He is married and has one child.
