NEW YORK, 2 November (UN Headquarters) -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of Rajat Kumar Gupta, a national of the United States, as his special adviser for management reform.

The Secretary-General is very grateful that Mr. Gupta, with his distinguished global track record and deep knowledge of management reform issues, has agreed to help him drive forward the ambitious reform agenda coming out of the 2005 World Summit at the United Nations last September.

In his new role, Mr. Gupta will act as a personal adviser to the Secretary-General on overall strategy, as well as participate in the Deputy Secretary-General's Post-Summit Coordination Committee, helping to ensure that the overall management reform programme is in line with best global practice.  He will also provide focused, specialist assistance on key issues of concern.

Mr. Gupta is Senior Partner and former Managing Director of McKinsey & Company, the global consulting firm.
