International Year of Mountain Photo-Exhibition at the Vienna International Centre VIENNA, 6 December 2002 (UN Information Service Vienna). UNIS Vienna, in collaboration with the Austrian magazine "Land der Berge" and other partners are arranging for a Photo-exhibition at the rotunda of the VIC. The exhibit will be displayed from 10 until 20 December as final highlight of the United Nations’ International Year of Mountains in 2002. Throughout the International Year of the Mountains "Land der Berge" organized a photo contest among their readers on six different mountain related themes. 18 of the best entries were selected by the popular mountain photographer Heinz Zak, and will be presented in the UNIS exhibit. The overall winner will be awarded with a holiday for two persons in one of Austria’s mountain resorts sponsored by Euro-Tours. As part of the exhibit the Vienna branch of Alpine Association will set up a climbing wall in the rotunda of the VIC. Visitors can literary "touch the mountains" here and collect information on the various sports activities of the Alpine Association. Spectators may also wish to climb the 6.5 meters high artificial mountain between 10 and 13 December 2002 under professional supervision. UNIS Vienna with additional educative boards and other materials will inform the audience about the UN’s work on the protection of sensitive ecosystems of mountainous regions, and the sustainable development of the people living in mountain areas. The opening of the exhibit and awarding ceremony followed by a guided tour through the VIC will start on Tuesday, 10 December 2002, at 11:00 hours at the Vienna International Centre, Wagramer Strasse 5, 1220 Vienna, Information counter at Gate 1 of the VIC Visitors’ Service. Guided tours take place Monday through Friday at 11:00 and 14:00 hours and last one and a half hours (exhibit included). No notice in advance needed. For groups of 10 persons or more advance notice is requested and guided tours can be organized at all times (weekends as well).
