Secretary-General to Travel to Vienna for European Union-Latin America/Caribbean Summit

VIENNA, 9 May (UN Information Service) -- The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be in Vienna later this week to deliver a keynote address at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union (EU), and Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Heads of State and Government of 60 countries of the European Union, including the acceding countries Bulgaria and Romania, and of Latin America and the Caribbean will be in Vienna for the Summit which is on 12 May.

While in Austria the Secretary-General plans to meet with the Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, Federal President Heinz Fischer, and Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik as well as a number of Heads of State and Government attending the Summit.

Following the Summit, the Secretary-General will travel on to the Republic of Korea, Japan, China, Viet Nam and Thailand.

In Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing, he will meet with high-ranking Government officials, as well as with students from leading universities. Then the Secretary-General will travel on to Hanoi, where he expects to meet with the President and other senior Government officials. In Bangkok the Secretary-General addresses the High-Level Panel on Human Development.

He is expected to return to New York towards the end of May.
