Journalists are invited to cover the 27th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) taking place in Vienna from 14 to 18 May. Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will address the opening session starting at 10 a.m.
The CCPCJ brings together participants from Member States, inter-governmental organizations and civil society. This year's thematic discussion will focus on criminal justice responses to prevent and counter cybercrime.
On 14 May, a cybercrime workshop organized by the Network of Institutes affiliated with the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme (PNI) will address the challenges data overload, encryption, and data protection and privacy laws pose for cybercrime investigations, among other topics.
Resolutions under consideration by the Commission address the misuse of information technologies for trafficking in persons including children, strengthening crime prevention and criminal justice in the context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, access to legal aid and restorative justice.
Close to 90 events are scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the CCPCJ. During a side event on integrating a gender perspective in programming and evaluation, UNODC will be showcasing its work to prevent and stop trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants.
The CCPCJ plays a critical role in advancing collective efforts against national and transnational crime, while strengthening fair and effective criminal justice institutions. As the main policymaking body of the United Nations addressing crime prevention and criminal justice issues, and a governing body of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Commission acts as a forum where Member States decide on resolutions and decisions, exchange knowledge and best practices in preventing and countering crime.
