United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to join ceremony for 40 th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre on visit to Austria

VIENNA, 23 May (UN Information Service) - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will attend a special ceremony to mark the 40 th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre during a long-scheduled visit to Austria from 27 to 28 May 2019.

On Monday 27 May, the Secretary-General will address the commemorative event at the Vienna International Centre, and is scheduled to meet Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Karin Kneissl. The Secretary-General will also meet the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov, and heads of Vienna-based UN organizations.

The ceremony is scheduled to be attended by the Austrian President, the Foreign Minister and the Mayor and Governor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig. There will be a world premiere of a fanfare dedicated to the United Nations, composed by Johanna Doderer and entitled hundred ninety three+, with the soloist Yury Revich.

The Secretary-General will also attend a reception at Vienna City Hall on Monday 27 May.

The Secretary-General will also attend a 'Day of Action' with the United Nations Messenger of Peace, Yo-Yo Ma.

On Tuesday 28 May, the Secretary-General will deliver a keynote address during the R20 Austrian World Summit, an annual event on sustainable development organized by Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California. The Secretary-General will meet climate activist Greta Thunberg. The Secretary-General is also expected to have bilateral meetings with other senior leaders on the sidelines of the summit.
