Shadowing Programme 2023 – inspiring the next generation of diplomats

Approximately 130 students participated in this year’s Shadowing Programme to learn about the work of the United Nations and its career opportunities. The Shadowing Programme is organized annually to mark United Nations Day (24 October) and offers students enrolled in Master's or PhD programme the opportunity to have a one-hour virtual encounter with a UN staff member, join a virtual guided tour through the Vienna International Centre (VIC) and a virtual career workshop. It is coordinated by the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna and organized in cooperation with participating Vienna-based UN organizations and entities.

VIENNA, 30 November – The university students came from a wide array of study fields ‒ including History, International Relations, Environmental Studies, Communication Science, Human Rights, Economics, Computer Science, Security Studies, Linguistics, Law, Anthropology, Political Science, International Development and Engineering – and studied in various countries including Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czechia, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Türkiye and Ukraine.

A high number of UN experts from 10 Vienna-based UN organizations and entities joined the programme and shared experiences about their work and career opportunities in a one-hour virtual online session held with the students. The following UN organizations and entities participated this year:

The programme concluded with a virtual UN Careers workshop held by UNIS Vienna Director Martin Nesirky, at which the students had the possibility to gain valuable insights into career opportunities at the UN for young graduates, like the Junior Professional Officer Programme (JPO) and the Young Professionals Programme (YPP), and learned more about the work of the UN in Vienna and other duty stations. There was also an opportunity for the students to ask questions about UN careers.
