Teachers from Slovakia learn how to bring the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals into the classroom

In cooperation with the Slovak National Institute for Education and Youth (NIVAM), the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna invited teachers from all over Slovakia to attend the workshop "Teaching the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” at the United Nations Headquarters in Vienna.

VIENNA, 8 November 2024 – After getting a guided tour of the Vienna International Centre, the teachers were welcomed by UNIS Vienna Deputy to the Director Sonja Wintersberger and Petra Hullova from the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the UN in Vienna.

Afterwards, Ms. Wintersberger introduced the group to the UN Communications Principles and Strategies, demonstrating examples of the office’s work in the four countries that UNIS serves: Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Irene Hoeglinger-Neiva, Public Information Officer at UNIS Vienna, presented several teaching tools that can be used to engage students with the UN and the SDGs, including online platforms, videos, interactive learning tools such as mobile apps or online-simulation games.

In another presentation, Bianca Kopp from the Global Resource for Anti-Corruption Education and Youth Empowerment at the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) stressed the importance of education in the fight against corruption and crime.

The acquired knowledge was directly put into practice in the afternoon: in working groups the teachers developed lesson plans for their students to learn about the UN and SDG-related issues, such as environmental protection, health, and human rights. Afterward, the lesson plans were shared, demonstrating an impressive variety of creative approaches that could be used at schools. The teachers’ ideas ranged from film screenings to theatre plays and group works.

The day ended with the teachers expressing their gratitude for the interesting insights and takeaways from the workshop: “Thank you for the very fruitful, informative and enlightening workshop. I will certainly bring students to the UN in Vienna and work on the SDGs explicitly.”, one participant said afterwards. Denisa Ďuranová, Research and Project Officer for language policy and international cooperation at NIVAM, thanked UNIS Vienna for “a fantastic workshop with a pleasant atmosphere, full of interesting and beneficial information”.
