Information helps to keep the memory alive

To commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2011, the UN Information Service (UNIS) opened in cooperation with the Mémorial de la Shoah and the UN Holocaust Programme an exhibition about "The History of the Holocaust in Europe" at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). The high number of participants (about 150) indicated the people's need to remember the victims of the Shoa. Opening remarks were given by UNIS Director Maher Nasser, Mr. Stephan Heisler, Alternate Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations, Mr. Sandeep Chawla, Director of the Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs on behalf of the Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna, Ms. Irit Savion Waidergorn, Alternate Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations as well as Prof. Rudolf Sarközi, Chairman of the Ethnic Group Council for Romanies. All speakers reminded the audience about the necessity to learn from the Shoa and to prevent future genocides.

Visitors were also provided with information material at a stand close to the exhibition. The next day a documentary film called "Daring to Resist: Three Women Face the Holocaust" was shown in the cinema room of the VIC as part of UNIS film/lecture series. The film featured the stories of three young Jewish women who fought back against the Nazis during the Holocaust. The audience appeared impressed and asked to distribute the film on a broader basis.

The exhibition will remain on display in the Rotunda/VIC through 11 February 2011.
