The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

On the International Year of Forests website there is information regarding events being organised throughout the International Year as well as interactive web tools and resources to promote dialogue on forests.

The world's forests cover one quarter of the Earth's land surface. They can play an important role in the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Goals on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and ensuring environmental stability.
