Discussions on cybercrime, trafficking in cultural property and prison overcrowding today at the 13 th UN Crime Congress

Doha, 16 April 2015 (UN Information Service) - With the size of the global prison population constantly growing, many prisoners are serving their sentences in overcrowded and cramped accommodation. The problem of prison overcrowding was discussed at a side event in Doha today and you can read more about it in Arabic.  The UN Office on Drugs and Crime in its prison reform activities promotes various forms of prison work. See some of the beautiful products made by prisoners around the world in this imovie.  Rehabilitation is important to reduce the rate of re-offending when prisoners are released.

The rehabilitation of violent extremist offenders was the topic for another meeting at the Crime Congress and you hear more in English or Arabic from the project manager for the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in Indonesia, Joanne Jousif.

In the Plenary participants continued to discuss international cooperation, including regional cooperation, to combat transnational organized crime and you can catch the webcast here. The workshop on public participation in crime prevention started today and you can read more in Arabic on this. The second workshop was looking at evolving crime such as trafficking in cultural property. Read more on that in French here. UNESCO Representative in the countries of the Gulf and Yemen, Anna Paolini spoke to the UN News Centre about preventing and countering illicit trafficking of cultural property.

Terrorist groups are finding new ways to raise funds for their extremist activities, according to the Executive Director of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee, Jean-Paul Laborde, who has been speaking about countering terrorist financing at the Crime Congress.  Listen to his interview in French and English.

Another important theme at the Congress is the growing role of public-private partnerships in tackling transnational crime. Listen to interviews on this in Spanish and English.
