13 th UN Crime Congress ends with a call for concrete action on crime prevention and criminal justice

Doha, 19 April 2015 (UN Information Service) - The head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov, speaking at  the closing of the 13 th UN Crime Congress today, said the key task now was to turn the Doha Declaration into action. The  President of the Congress, the Prime Minister of Qatar and Minister of the Interior, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, also spoke at the closing. Read more about the final day's events here in  English and  French.

Mr. Fedotov spoke to UN Radio and Television about the outcome of the Crime Congress. You can watch his interview in  English and  Russian or listen to it here in  English and  Russian.

UN TV and Radio also spoke in Arabic to Lulua Asaad, Associate Programme Officer (Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice) from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, about the achievements of the congress and what's expected during the next five years.

Crime and conflict are inextricably linked according to a researcher from the United Nations University (UNU).   Senior Policy Adviser John de Boer spoke to UN Radio about this and how we need to stay ahead of criminals who can be 'great innovators'.

A UNODC Crime Prevention expert, Nicole Maric, spoke to the UN News Centre about combating drugs and illicit goods trafficking in containers and  you can watch it here. The links between violence and development were the subject of an interview with the  Research Director of the Small Arms Survey, Anna Alvazzi del Frate which is also on UN Web TV.

Violence against children continues to have a devastating effect on children, families, and society as a whole and at the Crime Congress Member States were urged to take action and implement the new international standards on the  elimination of violence against children. Read more here.

Mr. Fedotov also spoke to the Congress about the tragedy in the Mediterranean where as many as 700 migrants are feared drowned after their boat capsized.
