Secretary-General, Deploring Assault on Freedom of Movement of Myanmar Democratic Leaders, Calls for ‘Substantive Political Dialogue’

NEW YORK, 3 September (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General reiterates his deep concern at the reports of the recent actions affecting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the National League of Democracy (NLD) who have been involuntarily returned to Yangon on 2 September.  Reports concerning further infringement of the freedom of movement and the freedom of political expression are particularly disturbing.

The Secretary-General emphasizes the need to respect the human rights of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the NLD.  He once again stresses the necessity for national reconciliation and urges the two sides to engage, as soon as possible, in a substantive political dialogue, as called for by a series of resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights.
