Secretary-General Welcomes Tuvalu as New Member of United Nations Family

NEW YORK, 5 September (UN Headquarters) -- Following is the text of remarks made by Secretary-General Kofi Annan this afternoon on the occasion of the flag-raising ceremony for Tuvalu, 189th Member State of the United Nations:

We have assembled here today to welcome a new member to our family of nations.  By raising its flag in this place, Tuvalu expresses its commitment to ensuring not only the welfare and human rights of all its citizens, but also its dedication to promoting peace and human dignity throughout the world.

Tuvalu may be one of the smallest nations in our organization, but it is also one of the most peaceful.  At a time when many small States are embroiled in violent conflicts, Tuvalu has remained stable and serene.  Tuvalu has also shown leadership in environmental issues such as the reduction of greenhouse gases, issues that are becoming vital to the health of the whole world.

The United Nations is a forum where all nations are heard, regardless of their size.  I am confident that the voice of Tuvalu will prove to be an eloquent one in our family.  On behalf of the United Nations, I extend my warmest welcome to Tuvalu as the 189th Member of our Organization.
