 UN Extends Deadline for Nominations
For Civil Society Award 2000

 VIENNA, 24 March (UN Information Service) -- The UN Office in Vienna announced today that due to the postponement of the United  Nations Vienna Civil Society Award 2000 from summer to autumn, it  has extended the deadline for nominations to 15 May 2000. 

 It is seeking  nominations of individuals or organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the fight against crime, drug abuse and terrorism or in fostering justice and social progress. According to the organizers, an organization cannot nominate itself for the award. Winners will be selected by a panel of prominent persons and will be invited to Vienna for the award ceremony at a date to be announced. 

 Last year, drug prevention organizations in Japan and Mexico and individual activists from India and Uganda received medals, certificates and shared $100,000 in prize money.

 Nominations may be made by governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions or individuals.
