GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT SUBMITS DECLARATION
ON AIDS TO MEMBER STATES

NEW YORK, 27 June (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued yesterday, 26 June, by the Spokeswoman for General Assembly President Harri Holkeri:

The President of the General Assembly this evening submitted to the Member States the draft declaration of commitment which will be the official outcome document of the ongoing General Assembly special session on HIV/AIDS.

Mr. Holkeri submitted the declaration after final agreement on the text had been reached by the Member States. The text was essentially the one reached over the weekend, in consultations led by the two co-facilitators of the preparatory process of the special session, Penny Wensley of Australia and Ibra Deguène Ka of Senegal.

In this connection the President wishes to extend his deepest gratitude to his two co-facilitators, Ambassador Wensley of Australia and Ambassador Ka of Senegal, without whose help this would not have been possible.

The President is very pleased that agreement has been reached on a text that is strong and progressive and that offers significant targets and strategies for combating HIV/AIDS.
