SECRETARY-GENERAL "DEEPLY CONCERNED"
AT RENEWAL OF VIOLENCE IN NEPAL

NEW YORK, 26 November (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the flare-up of violence in Nepal after the rebels belonging to the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) broke a four-month long ceasefire and resumed armed actions in more than one-third of the Kingdom’s districts. This has led to the declaration today of a state of emergency throughout the country.

The Secretary-General regrets that the insurgents abandoned peace talks with the Government that started last August. He will continue to follow closely the developments in Nepal.
