SECRETARY-GENERAL DISTRESSED AT
"HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE" FROM AFGHAN EARTHQUAKE

NEW YORK, 26 March (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today in London by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General was distressed to hear of the severe earthquake in northern Afghanistan, which has caused heavy loss of life. He has asked the United Nations Mission in Kabul to do everything possible to help. To that end, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General has already convened a meeting with United Nations agencies and with non-governmental organizations, with the aim of assisting the Interim Administration to deal with this tragedy in a country that has suffered so much in recent years.
