NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LITHUANIA
PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

VIENNA, 11 November (UN Information Service) -- The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania, Rytis Paulauskas,  presented his credentials today to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Paulauskas was serving as Director of the Security Policy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania. He served as Executive Secretary of the Lithuanian Delegation for Negotiations on Accessions to NATO, Member of the Working Group on the Preparation of the National Security Strategy (Feb.2003 – Nov.2003). He has also served as Director, Multilateral Relations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Head of the Working Group on the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of Europe (2001-2003); Head of Security Policy Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Head of the Secretariat of the Lithuanian NATO Integration Commission to the Government (1999-2000); Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations, Legal Counsellor of the Mission; Rapporteur of the Sixth (Legal Affairs) Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations (1996-1999); Counsellor, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations in New York; Representative at the Third (Human Rights) and Sixth (Legal Affairs) Committees, Commission on Human Rights (1995-1996); Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg; Member of Working Group for the Compatibility of Lithuania’s Legislation with the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the Case Law of the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights (1994-1995); First Secretary, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (1993-1994); Attache and then Acting Head, International Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania (1991-1993).

 

Mr. Paulauskas has also served as head of various Lithuanian delegations, and has been decorated with the Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania.

 

Born on 24 May 1969 in Vilnius in Lithuania, Mr. Paulauskas received a Masters of Arts Degree as a Fulbright Scholar at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Massachusetts (in the United States). He has also studied at the J. F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (2000-2001) and has attended training courses at the Academy of International Law, The Hague (1992). Further, he received a L.L.M. degree at Vilnius University Law School in Lithuania (1987-92).

He is married with one child.
