VIENNA, 1 July (UN Information Service) -- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, Antanas Valionis, paid a visit today to Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).

Mr. Costa has stressed Lithuania's important role in initiating and supporting drug and crime control efforts in the Baltic region. He has expressed UNODC's willingness to continue supporting the country's efforts by providing policy advice in improvement of drug and crime control measures in preparation for Lithuania’s accession to the European Union.

UNODC has been working in the Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - since 1993, focusing on the development of legal and institutional structures for drug control, and on the creation of national strategies, including new drug demand reduction methods and concepts.
