SECURITY COUNCIL ADOPTS ANNUAL REPORT TO GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR PERIOD 1 AUGUST 2002 – 31 JULY 2003

NEW YORK, 19 September (UN Headquarters) -- The Security Council, this morning, adopted without a vote its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2002 to 31 July 2003.

The annual report to the General Assembly is required by Article 24, paragraph 3, of the United Nations Charter. According to a note by the Council President (document S/2002/199), members of the Council have decided to continue to submit the report in a single volume. However, the report presented to the General Assembly at its fifty-seventh session covered the period from 16 June 2001 to 31 July 2002, and the period of coverage for all future reports will be from 1 August of one year to 31 July of the next.

In introductory remarks, Joseph Stephanides, Director of the Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political Affairs, said the report was the second one prepared according to the guidelines of the aforementioned President’s note aimed at enhancing the report’s quality. Of particular interest, he said, was the introduction to the report, which contains an analytical summary of the work of the Council.

The meeting, which began at 10:53 a.m., adjourned at 10:56 a.m.
