NEW YORK, 26 October (UN Headquarters) -- The Security Council this morning decided to hold a two-day meeting on the situation in the Sudan on 18 and 19 November in Nairobi, Kenya, with representatives of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD).

Through the unanimous adoption of resolution 1569 (2004), the Council also decided that the agenda for the meetings will be the reports of the Secretary-General on the Sudan.  [For summaries of the Secretary-General’s 2004 reports, see Press Releases SC/8206 of 5 October, SC/8180 of 2 September and SC/8120 of 11 June.  The Secretary-General’s latest progress report can be found in document S/2004/787 issued on 4 October.]

By further terms of the text, the Council also decided to take the opportunity of its presence in Nairobi to discuss other peace efforts in the region with both the African Union and IGAD.

The Council’s discussion is expected to focus on the civil conflicts engulfing the Sudan, including the crisis in the Darfur region, as well as the long-running civil war in the southern part of the country.

This will be the eleventh time in its history that the Council has met away from United Nations Headquarters in New York and its first formal meeting in Nairobi.  It has also visited London; Paris (twice); Geneva; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Panama City, Panama; as well as several venues in New York State other than at United Nations Headquarters.

The meeting began at 10:10 a.m. and adjourned at 10:14 a.m.
