NEW YORK, 12 April (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Saturday, 10 April:

The Secretary-General has been following the recent developments in Iraq with great anxiety.

He has been in contact today with United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as with his own Special Adviser, Lakhdar Brahimi, who is currently in Iraq.

He is alarmed by the increasing number of civilian casualties and appeals to all parties to exercise restraint in order to minimize danger to innocent civilians.
