NEW YORK, 12 October (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is concerned at the deteriorating security situation in Côte d’Ivoire, in particular the attacks against the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) Sector East offices and staff in Forces nouvelles-controlled areas. The Secretary-General strongly appeals to all Ivorian parties to desist from any action that could aggravate the situation in the country.  He expects the Ivorian authorities and political forces to exercise restraint, to refrain from any resort to violence and to fulfil their commitments with regard to the full and unconditional implementation of the peace process.
