New Deputy Chief Executives Appointed at United Nations in Vienna

VIENNA, 21 June (UN Information Service)  -- Antonio Maria Costa, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) appointed Franz Baumann, Director, Division for Management, as Deputy Director-General of UNOV and Sumru Noyan, Director, Division for Operations, as Deputy Executive Director of UNODC respectively.

Prior to taking up his current position in November 2002, Mr. Baumann served as Executive Officer of the United Nations Department of General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. He began his UN career in 1980 as a Junior Professional Officer at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He has served in Nigeria and Haiti, as well as at the UN Headquarters in New York, including the posts of Executive Officer of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Senior Officer at the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

Ms. Noyan has been the UNODC Director of the Division for Operations since November 2001. She joined the United Nations International Drug Control Programme in 1994 as Chief of the Operational Activities Branch. For three years, she was responsible for the coordination of all technical cooperation activities in the area of drug control and for the management of the Branch as well as its 18 field offices around the world. Prior to joining the United Nations, Ms. Noyan was a career diplomat with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1969 and she holds the rank of Ambassador. Ms. Noyan served in different capacities in Ankara as well as at diplomatic representations abroad, including Belgrade, Paris (UNESCO) and Dusseldorf.
