Joint Inspection Unit Elects Chairman and Vice-Chairman

GENEVA, 2 February (UN Information Service) -- The Joint Inspection Unit (JIU), the only system-wide, external oversight body of the United Nations system, held its winter session from 24 to 29 2005.  During that session, a series of important topics were discussed, among which were the content of the programme of work for the year 2005 and a review of the main events that took place during 2004, including the measures that needed to be taken to implement fully the provisions of General Assembly resolution A/59/267 of 23 December 2004.

At its first meeting, the Unit re-elected Inspector Ion Gorita (Romania) as its Chairman and Inspector M. Deborah Wynes (United States) as its Vice-Chairman for the current calendar year.  Their corresponding curriculum vitae are available in the JIU Web site:  www.unsystem.org/jiu/. This site also contains information on the statute of the Unit, its purpose, reports issued by the Unit in the past and other material of interest.
