Secretary-General Appoints Michael von der Schulenburg as Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs in Iraq

NEW YORK, 6 May (UN Headquarters) -- The Secretary-General has appointed Michael von der Schulenburg of Germany as Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq.  He will be based in Baghdad.

Mr. von der Schulenburg has almost 30 years of experience with international organizations.  He served in various capacities with the United Nations in New York, Vienna, Haiti, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran and Syria.  Most recently, he served as the Director of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan and as a Director with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.

The Secretary-General is committed to doing everything possible to assist the new Iraqi Government in the next phase of the country’s political transition in accordance with Security Council resolution 1546.
