Secretary-General’s Special Envoy Departs for Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon

NEW YORK, 31 March (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the implementation of Security Council resolution 1559, Terje Roed-Larsen, will depart this evening for Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.  He will have discussions with senior officials of those governments and others related to the implementation of the resolution 1559 in preparation for the Secretary-General's report to the Security Council in mid-April.

In Damascus and Beirut, Mr. Roed-Larsen will deliver personal messages of the Secretary-General to President Bashar Al-Assad of Syria and to President Emile Lahoud of Lebanon, respectively.
