Following Kabul Explosion, Secretary-General Condemns in Strongest Terms Increasing Number of Attacks in Afghanistan

NEW YORK, 11 September (UN Headquarters) -- The following statement was issued on Friday, 8 September, by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has learned with great concern about the explosion in Kabul today that claimed the lives of up to 16 people and wounded dozens more, the vast majority of them civilians.

The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of the victims.  In recent months, there have been an increasing number of such attacks in Kabul and other parts of the country.  The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest possible terms these acts, which reflect an inexcusable disregard for the value of human life and only serve to undermine the country's transition.
