New Permanent Observer of the Council of Europe
Presents Credentials

VIENNA, 26 May (UN Information Service) - The new Permanent Observer of the Council of Europe Office in Vienna, Childerik Schaapveld, presented his credentials today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), Yury Fedotov.

Mr. Schaapveld has served in various capacities in the course of his career, among them: Director of Democratic Institutions of the Directorate General for Democracy and Political Affairs at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (2009-2011); Head of Democratic Governance Unit (2003-2009) and NGO Advisor (2002-2003) at the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in Warsaw; Task Manager of the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) for Central and Eastern Europe at EuropAid (AIDCO) at the European Commission in Brussels (2001-2002); Co-ordinating Programme Manager for Central and Eastern Europe at the European Human Rights Foundation (EHRF) in Brussels (1993-2001).

Mr. Schaapveld holds a Masters in Contemporary History from Leyden University and speaks Dutch, English, French and German.
