Summer course on renewable energy for decentralized systems opens in Trieste

TRIESTE/VIENNA, 5 June (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - Renewable energy for decentralized systems is the focus of the summer course organized by the International Centre for Science and High Technology (ICS) of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Trieste this week.

The five-day course brought together participants from Armenia, Benin, Brazil, Ghana, Mexico, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe. They will receive training in such areas as energy access, renewable energy policies, technology trends and potentials, selection of renewable energy technologies, low-carbon technologies, and industrial energy efficiency.

"Interactions between economic activities and the environment are increasingly dependent on technologies. Recent scientific and technological developments in energy production and utilization, when adequately adapted to the local context, can significantly improve business competitiveness and reduce environmental impact. It is therefore important that future decision-makers in corporate business as well as in public institutions are provided with knowledge of the technological options available besides strategies for assessing and planning local resources," said Stefano Bologna, ICS-UNIDO Managing Director.

The ICS-UNIDO summer course aims at building capacities and improving the knowledge of young professionals from developing countries, including from Africa.

The course is being offered in cooperation with the ALMA Graduate School of the University of Bologna, the Politecnico di Milano (Technical University of Milan) and the ISF (Engineers without borders).

Lectures are broadcasted live on the ICS web site:
