Launch of the

United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014 - 2024)

 

NEW DELHI/VIENNA, 3 February (UN Information Service) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sustainable Energy for All and Chief Executive Officer of the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL), Kandeh K. Yumkella will launch the Asia roll-out of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) in New Delhi, India.

As part of the Asia regional launch, the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will host high-level events. Organized on the margins of the 2014 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS), the panel discussions will focus on " Barriers to Achieving Sustainable Energy for All" and " Capacity Building Needs for Achieving Sustainable Energy for All."

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously declared 2014‑2024 as the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All, underscoring the importance of energy issues for sustainable development and for the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda.

The resolution stressed strong support for the Secretary-General's  initiative, launched in 2011,  and  seeks to achieve universal access to modern energy services, double the improvement rate of energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030 in order to spur economic growth, address global inequalities and preserve the environment.
