Pacific Launch of the
United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014 - 2024)

NADI/VIENNA, 31 March (Sustainable Energy for All Initiative - SE4ALL) - The Sustainable Energy for All Initiative will launch the Pacific Region roll-out of the UN Decade for Sustainable Energy for All in Nadi, Fiji. The Decade launch takes place in the context of the Pacific Regional Meeting for Energy and Maritime Transport Ministers.

Opening remarks by: Dr. Colin Tukuitonga, Director-General of the Pacific Community

Keynote address by: Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, Representative of the UN Secretary-General, and Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Ms. Susan McDade, Country Action Director, will deliver a statement on behalf of Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sustainable Energy for All and Chief Executive Officer of the initiative, Kandeh K. Yumkella.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously declared 2014‑2024 as the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All, underscoring the importance of energy issues for sustainable development and for the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda.

The resolution stressed strong support for the Secretary-General's  initiative, launched in 2011,  and  seeks to achieve universal access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030 in order to spur economic growth, address global inequalities and preserve the environment.
