NASA's One Year Mission and ESA's Rosetta Mission centre stage at the UN in Vienna

VIENNA, 2 February (UN Information Service) - Media are invited to attend several side-events during the 52 nd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), 2-13 February, at the Vienna International Centre.

Dr. Julie A. Robinson, Chief Scientist for the International Space Station (ISS) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Johnson Space Center

and

Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), will discuss international cooperation of the upcoming Joint US-Russian One-Year Mission to the International Space Station of NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. The benefits of this historic mission will be discussed.

Rosetta's s journey - unlocking the origins of life

Thursday, 5 February, 13:00, Board Room D, VIC

The European Space Agency's Rosetta Mission launched in 2004 and arrived at Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 6 August 2014. Prof Mark McCaughrean, Senior Scientific Advisor in the Directorate of Science and Robotic Exploration, ESA, will recount how Rosetta became the first mission in history to rendezvous with a comet, escort it as it orbits the Sun, and deploy a lander to its surface.

Followed by a reception.

Ceremony and display of the Argentine ARSAT 1 satellite and Tronador rocket models along with a video and followed by a reception. Speeches by Matías BIANCHI VILLELLI, President of ARSAT, and Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA.

Wednesday, 4 February, 13:15 - UNOOSA Permanent Space Exhibit, DOE Corridor, VIC

A model of the Mars Orbiter Mission will be donated by India with a brief ceremony. Speeches by Mr. V.K. DADHWAL, Director, National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), ISRO and Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA.

Monday, 9 February, 13:00, Rotunda, VIC

Inauguration ceremony and reception for the European Commission Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System interactive exhibition, followed by reception.Speeches by Ambassador Györgyi Martin Zanathy and Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA.
