VIENNA, 23 February (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today welcomed the accession of the Republic of Kiribati as a new member of the Organization.
This follows the recent accession of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to UNIDO.
"I welcome our newest Member State, Kiribati," said Director General LI Yong. "UNIDO stands ready to further offer its support to Small Island Developing States on their path towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development."
The accession of Kiribati and the Marshall Islands (in 2015) to UNIDO follows the Third United Nations International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which took place in September 2014 in Apia, Samoa, on the theme of "The Sustainable Development of SIDS Through Genuine and Durable Partnerships".' The conference outcome document, titled "SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway", called for fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, building capacity and increasing the competitiveness and social entrepreneurship of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and state-owned enterprises, as well as encouraging inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
