UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov welcomes safe release of Colombian colleague Herledy Lopez

VIENNA, 5 July (UN Information Service) - On behalf of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) I warmly welcome today's release of our Colombian colleague Herledy Lopez.

I am tremendously happy for him, his loved ones, friends and colleagues, and I congratulate all those whose hard work and dedication have contributed to this positive outcome.

UNODC will now go on with its vital work of supporting the Colombian peace process, and working closely with Colombian farming families to help them move away from illicit crop cultivation and towards sustainable and viable livelihoods.

Background: Herledy Lopez was working for UNODC in Colombia when, on 3 May 2017, he was abducted in the locality of Barranquillita, Department of Guaviare, some 350 kms south-east of Bogota.
