Press Conference

of the

Fifth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians

When: Thursday, 12 October at 13:30 (following the ministerial segment)

Who:    with Ministers and Officials of the Carpathian Convention Member States: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine, and representative of the Visegrad Group in format V4+4 (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia + Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia,)

-        The Introduction and Adoption of the Protocol on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development 

-        The Signature of the Protocol and Ceremony

-        The adoption of the new Article on Climate Change to the Carpathian Convention

The Fifth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians will take place on 10 - 12 October 2017 in the Hunguest Hotel Palota, Lillafüred, Hungary at the invitation of the Government of the Hungary.

The meeting also marks the handover of the Czech Presidency of the Carpathian Convention to the Hungary, who will hold the Presidency of the Convention until 2020.

High-level representatives from the seven Carpathian States together with many stakeholders from the regional, European and international levels will meet in Lillafüred for the Fifth Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention). This event will be relevant for shaping the way towards further strengthening sustainable development of the Carpathian region while ensuring the protection of biological, landscape and cultural diversity.

As special highlights, the COP5 is expected to adopt the new Protocol on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development. Moreover, action on climate change by the Carpathian Convention will be enhanced by considering adoption of the new Article 12bis "Climate Change" to the Convention and launching the Outlook on Climate Change Adaptation in the Carpathians, part of the UN Environment Mountain Adaptation Outlook series launched at COP21 UNFCCC in Paris.
