Executive Director, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov:

Statement on International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

21 August 2018

VIENNA, 21 August (UN Information Service) - This first International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism is a much-needed opportunity to ensure that the voices of victims and survivors are heard, and to renew our commitment to providing the support they need and deserve.

Let us stand in solidarity and sympathy with all victims. We must speak out against hatred and division, and do all that we can to prevent more children, women and men from being killed or harmed by terrorism and violent extremism.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime remains fully engaged with our UN partners in supporting all countries to implement the UN Global Counter-terrorism Strategy, including through technical assistance and capacity building to reinforce the universal legal framework against terrorism. In this way, governments can pursue effective action to bring terrorists to justice, assist victims and make our societies safer.
