VIENNA, 21 May (UN Information Service) - The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna invite media representatives to a ceremony for the Announcement of Opportunity for the United Nations/China Cooperation on the Utilization of the China Space Station (CSS). The ceremony will be held on Monday, 28 May, from 6:30 p.m. at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Vienna and will be followed by a reception.
In 2016 UNOOSA and the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to develop the space capabilities of United Nations Member States via opportunities on-board China's future space station. This agreement will enhance international cooperation in space research and exploration with a particular focus on helping developing countries access space and its benefits. Completion of the CSS is expected by 2022 and will mark the third step in China's space programme, which began in 1992.
The ceremony will include the announcement of further details of how Member States can participate in this initiative, as well as remarks from:
- SHI Zhongjun, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna
- Simonetta Di Pippo, UNOOSA Director
- Technical experts from the China Manned Space Agency.
