Tuesday 6 November 2018, 1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Room 12, United Nations, New York

VIENNA/NEW YORK, 2 November (UN Information Service) - The media is invited to cover a Special Event led by UNODC Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, on the crucial challenge of educating younger generations on the rule of law, and the comprehensive resources published by UNODC to support this.

Following the Doha Declaration, adopted by Member States at the 13th United Nations Crime Congress in Qatar, UNODC established the Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration with generous funding from the State of Qatar. Amongst others, it emphasizes the importance of education in the mission to prevent crime and promote a culture of lawfulness, through its Education for Justice (E4J) initiative which is developing a portfolio of innovative tools to support educators at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. These resources, which will be presented at this Special Event, offer direct support to teachers and help Member States achieve their commitments to integrate crime prevention, criminal justice and other rule of law aspects into their respective educational systems.

Mr. Fedotov will be joined by Major-General Dr. Abdullah Al-Mal, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the State of Qatar and Vice-President of the Supreme Council of the Police College; Marie Paule Roudil, Director of Office and UNESCO representative to the United Nations on behalf of Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO; Jayathma Wickramanayake, the United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth; and Dikembe Mutombo, President of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation and former NBA All Star Basketball Player.

The discussion will be moderated by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, and introduced by Ahmed bin Hassan Al-Hammadi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar.
