18 September 2019
VIENNA, 18 September 2019 (UN Information Service) - With its accession to the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (also commonly known as the "New York" Convention), effected on 17 September 2019, the Maldives becomes the 161st State party to the Convention. The Convention will enter into force for the Maldives on 16 December 2019.
The New York Convention is widely recognized as a foundation instrument of international arbitration. It requires courts of contracting States to give effect to arbitration agreements and to recognize and enforce awards made in other States, subject to specific limited exceptions. The New York Convention contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular by promoting the rule of law at the national and international levels and by ensuring effective access to justice.
With a view to promote the dissemination of information on the Convention as well as its harmonized application, a Guide as well as an online platform containing the most comprehensive and freely accessible database of case law and bibliography on the Convention has been developed and can be accessed at http://www.newyorkconvention1958.org. Further information on UNCITRAL texts is available on the UNCITRAL website at www.uncitral.un.org.
