Combatting Transnational Organized Crime tops agenda at UN Office on Drugs and Crime conference

Media are invited to attend the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) in Vienna and online from 12 to 16 October 2020

VIENNA, 1 October (UN Information Service) - Government representatives, crime experts and civil society partners will meet next week in Vienna to discuss the global challenges of transnational organized crime.

The opening session will be addressed by Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Ambassador of Italy, Alessandro Cortese, President of the 9 th session, among others.

The tenth session will discuss strategies needed to counter transnational organized crime. Participants at the meeting will focus on the implementation of the UN Convention and its Protocols against trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants and illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, as well as on the provisions of the Convention on international cooperation in criminal matters and how the Convention can be used to tackle new and emerging crimes.

During the conference, nearly 60 virtual side events will examine a range of topics, including a high-level side event on: 'The Palermo Convention 20 years after: Unleashing its full potential through the implementation of the review mechanism',  'Wildlife Crime in the Spotlight: Recent trends and policy implications', 'The dark web and transnational organized crime: South East Asian perspectives', and many more.

Media accreditation

Registration and COVID-19 measures: All media representatives who want to attend in person at the Vienna International Centre ( including those with yearly accreditation to the VIC) will need to register in advance by writing to press.vienna[at]un.org by COB on Tuesday 6 October 2020.

Media representatives are reminded that they have to adhere to all mandatory COVID-19 related measures such as physical distancing and wearing protective face masks while at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), while entering and leaving the premises, in all security areas and in personal interactions with VIC personnel.

Access to the M-building is via Gate 1 of the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
