VIENNA, 10 October (UN Information Service) – Representatives from States Parties to the United Nations Convention on Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), representatives from international and regional organizations, crime prevention and criminal justice experts, members of civil society organizations and other stakeholders will meet in Vienna from 17 until 21 October to advance the implementation of the Convention and strengthen international cooperation to prevent and combat transnational organized crime.
The opening session will be addressed by Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and by Ambassador of Egypt, Mohamed Hamdy El Molla, President of the 10th Session of the UNTOC COP, among others.
The eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) will discuss the status of the implementation of UNTOC and its three Protocols relating to human trafficking, migrant smuggling and trafficking in firearms. It will focus on enhancing international cooperation to combat transnational organized crime, in particular cybercrime, crimes that affect the environment and other key areas.
An estimated 800 people are expected to attend and around 70 side events will be held in the margins of the eleventh session of the UNTOC COP. These include high-level events on "Trafficking in persons in conflict and crises situations", and on "Strengthening the Response to Cyber Violence against Women and Girls in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region".
