Children of War: Broken Childhood

Children of War: Broken Childhood

UNIS Vienna and the Visitors Service is providing support to the display of the exhibition "Children of War: Broken Childhood", at the Austrian Museum of Military History produced by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and Proof: Media for Social Justice. In the first week alone the exhibition attracted 2,000 people and the guided tours were booked out completely.

As a part of the exhibition, the museum showed a film featuring Ishmael Beah, a former Sierra Leonean child soldier, who talked about his life as a child soldier. Ishmael wrote the book "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Child Soldier" and was appointed UNICEF Advocate for Children Affected by War.

The main highlight of the first week of the exhibition was John Kon Kelei, a former child soldier from Sudan, who serves now as Public Educator. He offered visitors an insight in his life as a child soldier.

The exhibition and the accompanying school programme continue through 27 March.
