New Permanent Observer of the European Commission

 VIENNA, 2 October (UN Information Service) -- The new Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the United Nations (Vienna), Ulrich Dietmar Knüppel, paid an introductory courtesy visit today to Pino Arlacchi, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). Ambassador Knüppel was accredited to the United Nations (Vienna) on 28 August 2000.

 Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Knüppel has served as Head of Unit, External Relation, Relations with the United Nations, for the European Commission in Brussels.

 Between 1971 and 1974 Mr. Knüppel served as legal counsel to the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and as assistant to its President. After two years at the Finance Administration of the State of Baden-Württemberg he began his career at the European Commission in 1976.

 At first he served as an Administrator in the DG Agriculture in Brussels, where he was responsible for agri-monetary questions. In 1979 he was appointed Head of Section “Agriculture and Fisheries” in the European Commission’s Delegation in Washington D.C.. In 1983 he was promoted to Principal Administrator for Bilateral Issues (USA, Canada), GATT, Relations with OECD, FAO and other international organizations in the DG Agriculture.

 Mr. Knüppel is a graduate of law from the University of Saarbrücken, Germany. He received a degree as Assessor in Law in 1970.

He is married and has two children.
