NEW DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION TAKES UP DUTIES
AT UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT VIENNA

VIENNA, 11 November (UN Information Service) -- Upon the recommendation of the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the Secretary-General has appointed Franz Baumann (Germany) as the Director of the Division of Administrative and Common Services of UNOV. Mr. Baumann took up his duties in Vienna at the beginning of November 2002.

From August 1997 until his current appointment, Mr. Baumann was serving as Executive Officer of the United Nations Department of General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. He began his United Nations career in 1980 as a Junior Professional Officer for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Nigeria. He has also held the post of Administrative Officer in various Departments at United Nations Headquarters in New York and was Chief Administrative Officer for the human rights monitoring mission in Haiti (MICIVIH). Later he served as Executive Officer of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Senior Administrative Officer in the Office of Central Support Services and Senior Officer in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

Mr. Baumann was born in 1953. He holds degrees in Social Sciences as well as Public Administration from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

Mr. Baumann is married with one daughter.
