Tribute to Axel Wüstenhagen

VIENNA, 15 July (UN Information Service) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Axel Wüstenhagen, former colleague and Director of the United Nations Information Service (Vienna) on 6 July 2014.

Axel Wüstenhagen began his UN Career in 1972 as staff member of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) and was first assigned as Information Officer to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna. Later he served as Senior Information Officer and Deputy to the Director of the United Nations Information Service in Vienna (1985-1990) and as its Director (1993-1996). He also served as Director of the UN Information Centre (UNIC) Athens (1990-1993), and UNIC Bonn (1996-2003).

He was the author of numerous articles and contributions to books on the United Nations and was a lecturer on UN affairs at the Universities of Linz and Salzburg, Austria. He was also a member of various professional associations such as the Foreign Policy and United Nations Association of Austria, the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).
