Media briefing – under embargo on the World Wildlife Crime Report 2024

Brief Summary:

This third edition of the World Wildlife Crime Report delves into the complex realm of illicit wildlife trafficking and dissects the prevailing trends in the trafficking of protected wildlife species.  

It presents systematic analyses of the harm caused by and the impacts of wildlife crime, probes the factors driving wildlife trafficking trends, and takes stock of current knowledge about the effectiveness of the different types of intervention being pursued to resolve this problem.  

Case studies included in the report focus on illegal trade in orchids, seahorses, rosewood timber, elephant ivory, rhino horn and pangolins. 

The report leverages government wildlife seizure data for its global and thematic analyses, and it also draws from a wide variety of additional sources: new fieldwork by UNODC examining specific wildlife trafficking challenges, supplementary market data, new studies developed in response to CITES decisions and review of growing academic literature in this field. It also benefits from consultations with a wide range of experts working on related topics.
