United Nations Stamps celebrate International Moon Day

VIENNA, 19 July (United Nations Information Service) — To commemorate International Moon Day the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA is issuing six postage stamps and three souvenir sheets featuring various pictures from lunar missions.

The UN General Assembly declared International Moon Day, to be observed annually on 20 July in its resolution on “International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space”. The day was chosen to honour the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, and to raise awareness about the commitment to sustainable lunar exploration on the part of national and international space programmes worldwide.

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) supports Member States to develop the global governance of outer space, by serving as Secretariat of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and works to promote international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration of space, and in the utilization of space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development.

Ms. Aarti Holla-Maini, Director of UNOOSA said:

“Today’s International Moon Day takes place within the context of increasingly international interest and exploration of the Moon. The United Nations will leverage its unique convening power to foster the necessary dialogue on the way forward. Only three weeks ago, UNOOSA hosted the first UN Conference on Sustainable Lunar Activities and COPUOS established an Action Team on Sustainable Lunar Consultation (ATLAC), which aims to develop expert recommendations in the next two-three years on the safe and sustainable exploration of the Moon. These stamps will help to spread news about exploration of our closest and most important natural satellite.”

Ms. Rorie Katz of the UNPA is the designer of the stamp sheet.

The stamps are available online at www.unstamps.org and in-person from shops at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna where the stamps can be used for mailing.
