UN-SECRETARY-GENERAL ATTENDS "DIALOGUE AMONG CIVILIZATIONS" ROUNDTABLE IN AUSTRIA

Meeting with Austrian Chancellor and Austrian Foreign Minister

VIENNA, 22 August (UN Information Service) -- Following an invitation by Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Secretary-General Kofi Annan will attend a "Dialogue among Civilizations" roundtable discussion on Tuesday 28 August 2001. The Secretary-General will meet both the Chancellor and the Foreign Minister for talks, which will be followed by meetings with the press.

The one-day roundtable, initiated as a contribution to the UN Year of Dialogue among Civilizations, will analyse the challenges posed by a multi-cultural world and will try to find answers to those challenges on a national and international basis.

Media representatives are invited to attend the opening statements of the UN Secretary-General, the Chancellor and the Foreign Minister as well as the presentation of the results of the round table by the personal representative of the UN-Secretary-General, Giandomenico Picco, the Chancellor and the Foreign Minister.

The round table will begin its session at 10 a.m. on Tuesday 28 August 2001, at Hotel Schloss Fuschl, Waldhaus, Raum Schober, A-5322 Hof near Salzburg. Prior to the opening a photo opportunity will be arranged at 9:45 a.m.

Following the "Salzburg Dialogue among Civilizations: A new paradigm of International relations" the results of the round table will be presented at 5:30 p.m in the Raum Schafberg at the Waldhaus, Hotel Schloss Fuschl.

The Secretary-General will meet Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner the previous day, Monday 27 August 2001. Following the meeting, the Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister will address the journalists at a press encounter scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Hotel Hollweger, Salon Elferstein, A-5340 St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee.

The Secretary-General will meet Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel on Tuesday 28 August 2001. Following the meeting, they will hold a press encounter with media representatives at 12:15 p.m. at Hotel Schloss Fuschl, Waldhaus, Raum Schafberg, A-5322 Hof near Salzburg.

In the afternoon of the 28 August, the Secretary-General will meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in Salzburg.

Accreditation: Media representatives, who want to attend one of the above meetings, have to be accredited and are asked to contact the Information Service of the Austrian Foreign Ministry and to provide the name of the publication they represent. Press passes will be distributed by the Foreign Ministry at the entrance of Hotel Hollweger and Hotel Schloss Fuschl.
